MERIDIAN is the long lasting, fast acting turf insecticide that provides highly efficacious and thorough control, even in dry soils of the three most damaging turf insect pests, African Black Beetle (Heteronychus arator), Billbug (Sphenophorus brunnipennis) and Argentinean Scarab (Cyclocephala signaticollis).
Thiamethoxam can be absorbed by the leaves and crowns of the plant, it is therefore impotant to apply in a high volume apllication and watering the product in as soon as possible (the target pest is soil borne). Absorbtion through roots, after application to the root zone, normally happens over time and is facilitated by soil moisture. It is transported acropetally (upwards) in the xylem. This systemic translocation contributes to even distribution of the active ingredient within the plant tissue. Bio-availability of soil insecticides is very important to ensure high standard efficacy in all soil moisture conditions. See the Latest Technical Brochure in the recources section for more detailed information on this subject.
Thiamethoxam is a member of the neonicotinoid-insecticide group, and acts on the insect pest by blocking the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors within the insect nervous system.
Thiamethoxam has excellent protective and early curative activity (1st and 2nd instar larvae), although best results will be achieved when MERIDIAN is applied close to peak egg laying of the different pests to be targeted. Typically this would be around October through Jnuary (pest and location dependant). See the Latest Technical Brochure in the recources section for more detailed information on this subject.

Pest Controlled
- First instar larvae of African Black Beetle(Heteronychus arator)
- First and second instar larvae of Argentinian Scarab (Cyclocephala signaticollis)
- Larvae of Billbug (Sphenophorus brunnipennis)
For optimum turf quality and insectcontrol, use MERIDIAN in conjunction with turf management practices that promote good plant health.
Correct identification of the insect(s) is essential in selecting the most appropriate control measures.
African Black Beetle and Argentinean Scarab
Apply prior to or at peak egg hatch – mid spring to early summer, or when small larvae are present.
Billbug
Monitor adult activity through late spring and early summer. Spray when numbers peak or when small larvae (4 mm) are found in the thatch or surface soil. Early application is essential to minimise grass damage due to feeding.
Use the higher rate when pest pressure is high or 2nd instar larvae are present.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
RESISTANCE MANAGEMENT
MERIDIAN contains thiamethoxam which has single site activity, thus having the posibility of resistance development.
Ideally use MERIDIAN in a insect pest control programme, using alternative chemical group treatments to target adults.
Apply MERIDIAN at full recommended rates. Utilise management practices, which encourage healthy turf and reduce turf stress.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
Mixing
Add the required amount of MERIDIAN to clean water in half-filled spray tank with the agitator or by-pass in operation. Maintain agitation while filling tank with remainder of water. Agitate whilst spraying.
Application
To be effective MERIDIAN requires to be placed as close to the soil surface as possible. Ensure that equipment is properly calibrated to give an even distribution at the correct volume. Apply in a minimum of 500 L water/ha. For best results use extremely coarse droplets [Turbo Floodjet* (TF5) or TurfJet* (TTJ10)].
Compatibility
As formulations of other manufacturer’s products are beyond the control of Syngenta, and water quality varies with location, all mixtures should be tested prior to mixing commercial quantities.
Tankmixing
Tankmixing registered synthetic pyrethroids with Meridian could be beneficial in targeting adult beetles, this could reduce the number of adult actually laying eggs and thus reduces the grub pressure.

STORAGE AND DISPOSAL
Store in the closed, original container in a cool, well ventilated area. DO NOT store for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.Triple or preferably pressure rinse containers before disposal. Add rinsings to spray tank. DO NOT dispose of undiluted chemicals on site. If recycling, replace cap and return clean containers to recycler or designated collection point. If not recycling, break, crush or puncture and bury empty containers in a local authority landfill. If no landfill is available, bury the containers below 500 mm in a disposal pit specifically marked and set up for this purpose clear of waterways, desirable vegetation and tree roots. Empty containers and product should not be burnt.
Syngenta supports recycling through drumMuster.

SAFETY DIRECTIONS
Will irritate the eyes and skin. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. If product in eyes, wash it out immediately with water.
When opening the container and preparing the spray wear:
When using the prepared spray wear:
Wash hands after use. After each day’s use, wash gloves, goggles and contaminated clothing.
FIRST AID
If poisoning occurs contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone 131 126.
PRECAUTION
Re-entry period: DO NOT allow entry into treated areas until the treated areas have been fully irrigated as per Directions for Use, unless wearing chemical resistant footwear and gloves. DO NOT perform hand weeding and/or transplanting for 5 days after application unless wearing chemical resistant gloves. Footwear and gloves must be rinsed after each day’s use.

PROTECTION OF LIVESTOCK
Dangerous to bees. DO NOT spray any plants in flower while bees are foraging. DO NOT graze treated turf/lawn, or feed turf/lawn clippings from any treated area to poultry or livestock.
PROTECTION OF WILDLIFE, FISH, CRUSTACEANS AND ENVIRONMENT
Toxic to certain aquatic invertebrates. DO NOT apply under weather conditions, or from spraying equipment, that may cause spray drift onto adjacent areas, particularly wetlands, waterbodies or watercourses. DO NOT contaminate streams, rivers or waterways with the product or used containers.
