An Overview of Some Summertime Diseases

Dollar Spot (Sclerotinia homoeocarpa).
Active between 15 and 30 C under
high humidity and/or dew.
Cool season turfgrasses
susceptible at this time.
 issue-3--2008_dollar-spot.jpg Pythium blight (Pythium
spp
.) is most severe under
wet humid conditions with
high temperatures (30-35
C) and warm nighttime temperatures
(> 20 C)

Gray leaf spot (Pyricularia
grisea
) occurs under humid
conditions when temperatures
range between 28-32
C. In the US associated
with Lolium perenne, but
can attack kikuyugrass
 issue-3--2008_gray-leaf.jpg Take-all patch
(Gaeumannomyces
graminis
var. avenae) occurs
on new or young
creeping bentgrass turf.
Generally associated with
high pH rootzone mixes.

Brown Patch (Rhizoctonia
solani
) occurs under warm
humid conditions primarily
at this time on cool season
turfgrasses. Most active
when nighttime temperatures
remain above 21 C.
issue-3--2008_brown-patch.jpg Root decline of warm season
turfgrasses (G.
graminis
var. graminis) is
similar to take-all but occurs
under cloudy warmer conditions
on both new and old
turf.

Summer patch
(Magnaporthae poae) occurs
at temperatures between
28 –35 C. Highly
destructive on Poa pratensis
and Poa annua
 issue-3--2008_summer-patch.jpg Curvularia (Curvularia spp.)
is primarily a problem on
ultradwarf couchgrass. It
occurs under high temperatures
and cloudy wet conditions.
